The Hump

In Kunming we stayed at the Hump Hostel. At first when Annemarie told me where she had booked I thought it was a euphemism for something else, you know backpackers relaxing for a while…

As it turned out I was a bit off the mark. Inside the hostel there is a wall full of photos from the war. Planes mainly, but also a few bridges and roads been built.

The Hump was the name given by Allied pilots in the Second World War to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China

I was reading about The Hump on Wikipedia as this is a part of the war which I know almost nothing about. A massive air lift operation to get supplies into China to remove the Japanese invaders. Click the link to learn about it.

Whilst Annemarie is doing useful stuff (or sleeping) I’m reading Wikipedia and learning about the area.
